The Muse
What arrived on Helicon?

Hesiod was shepherding under holy Helicon. The Muses came.
They insulted him first. Mere bellies. Then they gave a staff, a voice, and a task.
The surviving witness is a poem. Theogony tells that morning. It is not a diary of it.

“Shepherds of the wilderness, wretched things of shame, mere bellies, we know how to speak many false things as though they were true; but we know, when we will, to utter true things.”
Hesiod, Theogony 26–28
Experience does not authenticate itself.
The same mouth can speak false things that look true, and true things when it will.
Arrival is not yet a seal.
Later the poem names the Muses as daughters of Memory. That genealogy is thin here on purpose. Myth keeps the mother. CHARISMATA keeps the arrival, and what the receiver does with it.
Plato, much later, described a chain from Muse to poet to performer to audience. That is another Greek account of transmission. It is not Hesiod’s Helicon scene. It is not a Christian gift under another name.
The Muse is not proto-charismata.
The question that survives the difference is simple. Why does making so often feel received?
